Summary: Has some moments.

It is amazing to me that this film got made in Post-Handover Hong Kong in 2003. This movie tested the government censors to the limits with its barrage of lascivious images. They did these types of films much better a decade earlier. If you are new to Hong Kong movies, this is not a good film to begin with.

Summary: Next time I'll listen...

Brian Thibodeau summed up the reasons to skip this movie in his review which under usual circumstances would be more than enough warning. But since I am putting together a blog on Teresa Mak I watched "To Seduce an Enemy" in the interests of complete coverage. Big mistake. This movie is every bit as bad as Brian says it is. It is so bad that a "slow and gauzy" lesbian sex scene in which Teresa Mak shows Winnie Leung how to seduce someone was almost boring--it was one of the few scenes that I didn't watch with the DVD player at 2X or 3X speeds. The problem with watching a bad movie quickly is that it doesn't make the experience any better.

Every bit of it is bad--one example happened very early in the movie. A woman has been sent to kill someone--she finds him in his office, gets him to the couch, straddles him (while wearing her overcoat and apparently nothing else although we have to infer that) and stabs him quite a few times. It was one of memorable scenes from "Basic Instinct", the movie that made Sharon Stone a star. Here it is obvious--really, really obvious--that the murderer isn't even close to her victim although the couch would have had to be restuffed afterwards.

Avoid this one.

Summary: Rape thriller comes late in the game

Financial tycoon Benny uses hypnosis to rape women, forcing them to kill themselves when they begin to suspect. When that doesn't work he gives them AIDS. Goofball cop Chin Kar-lok pairs up with tabloid snoop Winnie to break the case after one of her friends becomes the latest victim. Cut-rate cousin to the RAPED BY AN ANGEL series - and considered a followup to last year’s THE PEEPING - barely earns its Category III rating as nearly all the nudity is shot from discreet angles (in other words, mostly bums), the sex scenes are the standard slow ‘n gauzy leg and navel expeditions, and the double cross climax is ludicrous.
