The Unusual Youth

Lovely coming of age drama from building developer and Milkyway Image (Johnnie To’s company) chairman, Dennis Law. Follows primarily the movements of Chick (Marco Lok), and his friends Dragon (Ronnie Cheung), Suki (Race Wong), Mei Mei (Yan Ng) and Biggie (Ronald Wong) during their post-tertiary years on the island of Cheung Chau. Everyone has their share of dramas, be it relationship, family or employment related, and the narrative follows the interconnected threads of their lives on the island.

Ghost movie fave Helena Law pops up as Chick’s belligerent old grandmother (whom the audience quickly learns to love to hate), and there’s some good stuff going on here – great scenery, fine performances, some nice writing, top camerawork (by Herman Yau no less) and a bouncy alt.pop score. Initially a bit irritating, due to the dislikeability of a couple of characters (most notably Marco Lok's Chick who never really shirks off his lazy, slacker persona), but easy to warm to and a rewarding experience for that fact. Most rewading of all, for this viewer, was the radiance and sense of community invested in the production from its primary setting of Cheung Chau; the protagonists' trials and tribulations are far more simplistic and earthy than their faster-paced HK contemporaries. If tales of small-town, community-driven life & love appeal to you then this is definitely well worth making time in you schedule for!
