This movie was surprisingly entertaining. I managed to avoid the film initially because I was so tired of this industry thing of making action stars out of folks who can sing and sell records. That's just me being a hater on all these pretty guys. As for this movie, Lam Tze-Chung is cast as the funny sidekick and this is an actor I really enjoy watching do work. The director Ken Yip Wing-Kin is doing nice work handling the interesting screenplay that uses tried and true formulaic genre sequences with a fresh approach.

There is also the performance of, and the action direction by, Fan Siu-Wong. He has learned his craft quite well and this Kung Fu Fighter [2007] would be worth your time. Fan and Chan Sek have put together a fine action direction team. They make this young pop star look good while surrounding him with many old school action comedy performers.

Kung Fu Fighter features some solid action, but the problem is that there's not nearly enough of it. In a movie that runs ninety-six minutes, about seventy minutes consists of sappy melodrama and dopey comedy, which is not a very good ratio at all for what should be a straight-forward martial arts picture.
