Painted Skin: The Resurrection

Reviewed by: STSH

Summary: Uncertain start, but ....

The opening credits nearly let this film down completely. We are treated to at least ten screens of producers’ names. White on black, no music, nothing else. Even for a credits reading tragic like myself, this is way too much. And for such a gorgeous-looking movie, why on earth make the opening credits so dull ? Wuershan still has much to learn from the great Tsui Hark.

I paid extra to see this movie in 3D, and there were hundreds of people credited with making Painted Skin Resurrection so. Unfortunately, their effort didn’t amount to much. There was more and better use of 3D in the Spiderman trailer than in the whole of PSR.

These whinges aside, PSR was a sumptuous feast for the eyes. The two stars were simply stunning and mesmerizing, and Qu’er and the demon hunter provided charming support. The paper-thin and silly story moved at a slow pace, but since this helped to stretch out the gorgeous colours and ethereal beauty of the stars, this way the right way to go.

I’d be happy to watch PSR again, but only in 2D.
