Rendezvous with Death

Reviewed by: Sydneyguy

Summary: PRetty good

What makes this better than the average Shaw brother kung fu movies is various factions involved, who is the good guys and who are the bad guys? And the million dollar question, whats in the box?

Wong Yu is a upstart young fighter who gets job to deliver a box which he is not allowed to know the contents of, but will be paid a fortune once its delivered. There are a lot of people who want the box for themselves while others help him in his journey

Lo Lieh is a standout, despite being a supporting actor he always seem to steal the show. Wong Yu doesnt seem to have much of a presence in this movie, while Chen Kuan Tai is solid in his role.

Worth watching

Summary: 7.5/10 - Sun Chung gets it right again

The story to RENDEZVOUS WITH DEATH is quite straightforward, without being simplistic or facile. It doesn't add anything particularly new to the world of wu xia films, but it does what it does well. In other hands, the film could easily have been rubbish, or at best kind of forgettable, but Sun Chung and his cast/crew turn it into good entertainment. Wong Yu isn't my favourite leading man, but Lo Lieh turns in such a good supporting performance he quite makes up for it. The action isn't 'best of breed', but it's all solid stuff. I can't call it 'classic' material, but it's definitely one to watch for fans of the genre.

Excellent movie in which the plot centers around a suitcase delivery. Sounds boring? You will not be bored for one second. It's full of twists and suspense, with some good action and great acting (how rare) thrown in. It even avoids many cliches that we've seen over and over again in SB movies, making it one of the most enjoyable Shaw Bros kung fu movies.
