Reviewed by: STSH Date: 11/29/2001 Summary: Impressive weepie This is, to date, by far the best Yonfan film I've seen. At this early stage of her career, Maggie was reported to have been rather lost and inexperienced as an actress, and was to take several more years to really find her own voice. But Yonfan does a superb job on her, being camerman and director. Maggie has never looked lovelier, and at least part of this credit must go to Yonfan. The way he controls the lighting for her glamour shots reminded me of the great Joseph von Sternberg working with Marlene Dietrich in the early 1930s. Maggie's character starts out as destructive and outrageous flirt, maturing somewhat later, and Maggie handles the complexities of the performance with aplomb, and she is compelling. Oddly enough, the weakness of this film is Chow Yun Fat. In what should have been an ideal romantic role, Chow does little more than sleepwalk through the picture, even failing to generate any sparks when he and Maggie first kiss. I've heard a few people comment that this film is depressing. Well, it doesn't have a happy end, and this is made pretty clear beforehand. But I think Maggie and Yonfan make it more than watchable most of the time. Recommended. Reviewer Score: 7

Reviewed by: jfierro Date: 12/21/1999 Maggie Cheung starts out as a carefree young girl who plays withthe boys' hearts, but all that comes to halt when she falls in love with a married man who refuses to leave his wife. Maggie goes off to Paris to study, but while she is away, her brother (Chow Yun-Fat) dies and she comes home to take care of family business. When a new man (also Chow Yun-Fat) enters her life, things appear to be looking up, but she still must deal with her former lover. This film is just too downbeat and depressing for my tastes, and it just drags on. Despite the presence of Chow Yun-Fat and Maggie Cheung, I wouldnt' recommend it.
