Three Against the World (1988)

As you might expect from a movie helmed by a pair of Yuens, Three Against the World offers up some nice action scenes. However, the fairly lame comedically-tinged heist-centered scenes that surround the fisticuffs aren't really all that hot, and might have you itching to hit the fast-forward button.

Mis-named movie, since the 3 are not against the world at all, but against each other. Andy Lau, Norman Chu and Teddy Robin Kwan engage in a battle of wills and skills to steal or protect the original copy of the Koran (!). Could have been interesting but the schemes and plans they come up with are just rather boring and dumb. It seems that not very much thought or effort was put into the production, basically.
With one of the Yuen clan onboard, though, you are at least assured some cool action sequences somewhere along the line, and 3ATW features some good fighting towards the end. Not really enough to save the movie from being a clunker though.

A fun movie where everyone knows everything - no dumb guy. The action is fast and furious, even if everyone is doubled. This kind of late 80s adventurer compares well to great recent entries like Tokyo Raiders.

Andy Lau, Norman Chu and Teddy Robin are three career thieves who know each other quite well. One day, a valuable scroll, headed for a museum exhibition, is placed under Lau's care. Lau's main job is to foil any attempts by Chu and Robin to steal the scroll while it sits in the museum.

My main dislike of the film is its lack of audience involvement. The film fails to create any sort of tension between the three competitors, as they know each other's plans far too well, and so viewers are simply taken for a rapid ride through the various attempts at stealing the scroll. I found the rather smug, all-knowing Andy Lau and Teddy Robin quite tedious after an hour. And I think that really spoiled what otherwise could have been a pretty good film. Definitely not a film for thinkers, but nice production values and a good end fight scene. 6.5/10.
