Summary: Long and Forgotten Ghost Story, A (1998)

In the week of 20 November, there are 3 movies opened from B&S while 'Long and Forgotten Ghost Story, The' is the one able to be showing in main Hong Kong movie circuit with its relative strong casting.

The story for the movie is quite simple. Millionaire's son SZE Fu-kwai (LAI Yiu-cheung) who was in love with prositute Blossom and wanted to marry her. However, his dad prohibited the marriage and SZE died with regret in late 19th Century. Though SZE died, his soul still remained in the World, now it's the almost time for him to be recycled and he wanted to meet Blossom whatever what of her is now. Youngsters Sara AU, CHEUNG Yuk-shan, etc. are residents for the past SZE's home. When they once play plate fairy, SZE is invited and SZE seeks their help to find Blossom.

Having considered the factor that it's the first trial direction for CHEUNG, the overall of the movie is not too bad. Maybe it's their first trial, they tend to be making the movie typical. It is quite obvious. Most of the ideas and scenes are seemed to be imitiate from other movies while the most of the plots are predictable like the process in finding Blossom and the vegeance when they youngsters declined to help SZE anymore. Being typical and predictable is okay for some movies like dramas and comedy. But I'm afraid audience are not keen on that happened in thrillers like this movie.

From this point, we can see another problem of the movie -- the love description between SZE and Blossom is not impressive enough to gain audience sympathy. Maybe they've put lots of plots on too many things like the relationship of youngsters. In fact, this line is a bit complex and loosely packed which resulted in the lack of capacity for filling other more worthputting elements. Maybe it's a sign showing their lack of confidence in making a movie in one or two type.

Another consideration is the issues generated from the movie. The scriptwriter tried to emphasize on the cotradictions between love of SZE and Blossom at any time zone. Before SZE died, he was blocked by his Dad. Now he is blocked by the Master LAW Ka-ying. This is a good issue for development. The movie can be a bit better if they can put 'Not with me' issue at a greater extent.

In terms of performance, I consider LAI Yiu-cheung is still strong, being a billionaire's son in last century, LAI has got lots of opportunity to show off and he has done it well. Other actors and actresses are a bit new and it seems that they still need to be polished.

On the whole, the movie is a good trial but it's still far from a good movie.
