Born in 1952 in Hakka, China, Kao was trained in the martial arts school of Choy Li Fut. At the age of 19, his friend referred him to Shaw Brothers as a stuntman. Kao's first film was director Chang Cheh's "The Heroic Ones". After working in "Boxer From Shantung", Kao moved to Taiwan to further develop his career, where he worked as an action choreographer and actor. Kao returned to Hong Kong five years later and worked in both regions. He reunited with Shaw Brothers in 1981 and was instantly cast as a pivotal role in Lan Nei-Tsai's "Brothers From the Walled City", where he portrayed Chien Hsiao-Hou's brother, and received rave reviews. He was starred in "Mercenaries From Hong Kong", "The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter" and "The Boxer's Omen". Kao also got his directorial debut in 1982 with "Dirty Angel".
