Biography

A native of Xinhui in Guangdong province, Chao's father Chao Wei was once a martial arts trainer for Shaw Brothers, who specialized in Hong Fists. Chao's granfather was under the tutelage of Lin Shi-Rong, who was the student of the legendary master Huang Fei-Hong. As Chao was raised in a wushu family, he had been trained in martial arts since childhood, and grew up to be a head trainer of Hong Fists in boxing schools. During the 1980s, Chao starred in renowned director Chang Cheh's film "Masked Avengers", "The Sword Stained with Royal Blood", "Five Element Ninjas", "The Weird Man" and "Death Ring". He played a wushu master in "Five Element Ninjas" and showcased his agility along with Cheng Tien-chi, Lung Tien-chiang and Lo Meng. The film's action sequences featured a wide range of weaponry such as the "golden cloak", "sword-in-cane", "hand marmor", "iron fist" and "brow-tip sword". With a touch of Japanese ninja elements, these action sequences were genuinely thrilling to watch. Chao played the leading role in "The Weird Man." Its story was set in the popular Three Kingdoms era, when the villainous Tsao Tsao puppeteered the emperor to control the warlords, and evil Taoist priests used "charm water" to con the public. Chao's character is the heroic and aggressive general Sun Tse, which seemed like a tailored role for Chao.
