Born in Amoy, and originally known as Jun Hai-Tang, Ivy Ling Po's on screen career started in 1954, when she took part in movies made in the Hokkien dialect. In 1961, she joined Shaw Brothers and became a voice double in "Dream of the Red Chamber". Li Han Hsiang, a famous director, saw her potential and gave her the male lead in "The Love Eterne". The film was a huge success in Hong Kong and Taiwan alike. It was said that when she visited Taipei, the entire city population came out to greet her. According to newspaper reports at that time, Taipei had gone berserk for "Brother Liang" (the character she played in the film) .Even nowadays many of her fans still call her by that nickname. Riding on her success, she went on to make a series of movies of the Huangmei opera genre like "Three Smiles" and "The Mermaid". Ling won many film awards such as the Special Performance Award of the 2nd Golden Horse Awards with "The Love Eterne", the Best Actress Award of the 11th Asia Pacific Film Festival with "Lady General Hua Mu Lan", and the Best Actress Award of the 6th Golden Horse Awards with "Too Late for Love".
