Alan & Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye (1991)

Summary: "chickens are our game"...
alan (tam) and eric (tsang) were childhood friends, who seperated when eric's father fled from debt, to america. years later, eric returns to hong kong, finding alan is working as a waiter, dreaming of being a singer. the two open a chicken farm and life seems pretty good; eric meets olive (maggie cheung) and is smitten but, on their first date, olive falls for alan. as alan rises rapidly to fame, the friendship between the three begins to break down...

with his directorial debut, peter chan crafts a
bittersweet tale of friendship. the story is sentimental, but the suprisingly under-stated style and a naturalistic quality, combined with a solid eric tsang performance (although tam and cheung are good as well), makes it an engaging watch.
