Walk In (1997)

Summary: Quintessential Hong Kong Cinema
Walk In is the kind of movie that could only have been made in Hong Kong, and therefore I think most Hong Kong movie fans will enjoy it. Is it supernatural horror? Action? Comedy? Romance? Yes, yes, yes, yes. It has all the strengths and weaknesses that make me love HK movies.

Wu Chien Lien fans will enjoy her portrayal of a guy (or an old tom cat?) occupying the body of young woman, sitting cross legged in a desk chair chomping on cigars. Unfortunately, she's not in for long enough; it's too bad they couldn't have found a way to get her character more involved. But when it comes to WCL, I'll take whatever I can get!

The rest of the cast does well. I particularly enjoyed Ada Choi's performance as Chicken's sister; she appears to have graduated magna cum laude from the Chingmy Yau School of Comedy Acting.

The "walk in" of the title refers to one person allowing another's soul to take possession of his body at the time of death. It doesn't necessarily make much sense, just go with it. The plot sets up because a police officer becomes paralyzed from the waist down and takes over the body of a guy in a coma who he thought was an innocent bystander caught in a crossfire, but turns out to be a small time crook and big time jerk. At this point, he has to win back the affection of his girlfriend, who isn't physically attracted to his new body, sort out relationships with the guy (Chicken's)wife and two concubines and his sister, dodge the triad, and take revenge for Chicken on the guy who left him in the coma. Whew!

It's a lot of fun. Recommended.
