Farewell to My Concubine (1993)

The Peking Opera (as experienced by two of its stars) is a metaphor for China's social and artistic decline in this hopelessly distended film. The production values and photography are a knockout; but the plot's gradually thrown out of kilter by dramatic epiphanies following one after another.
