The team behind the Infernal Affairs trilogy finally pulls it off (after doing some failures) taking the whole INFERNAL AFFAIRS concept to a new level by spinning some ideas around, taking advantage of the usage of wire-tapping/hidden cams, creates a fitting but fresh storyline (conspiracy within both the stock market and law enforcement, personal life struggles, and complicated relationships), and mixes everything together and achieves everything that could ever make a crime movie entertaining and deep: intense, gripping, emotional, thrilling, and intriguing.
The result is one of the finest movies ever produced in the Hong Kong crime genre for years, importantly reliant on the story and it's characters which is kind of rare in HK movies today. Of course, what I'm stating wouldn't be all that fair as there are movies with emphasis on story/character driven still being made in Hong Kong and that are as effective and off-setting. But at the same time, there hasn't been any movie that showed enough depth and reached the viewers as effective as OVERHEARD has, and that alone I command the makers for. Another plus for me is the fact that the makers are more concerned on bringing out what is necessary without overdoing things by stylistic choices which is common among filmmakers nowadays.
The most significant factor to this great accomplishment will have to be the cast and crew as it oozes with great talent: from the BTS crew (Alan Mak, Felix Chong, Comfort Chan Kwong Wing, Derek Yee) to the cast varying from Sean Lau (awesome as always!) to Louis Koo, Daniel Wu, Zhang Jingchu, Alex Fong, Waise Lee, and Michael Wong (probably the only movie where his performance doesn't look obviously bad).
