Leslie Cheung's Romeo romances Chow Sau-Laan's Juliet in a high school comedy. Her girls high school class is participating with his boys high school class in a production of Romeo and Juliet, which he has adapted to reflect his ideas regarding modern romance.

The movie takes a light approach to the romance and the comedy. The girls play pranks on each other and on a substitute teacher, and a few get into potentially dangerous situations, but no serious consequences result. The relationship between Romeo and Juliet predictably is mirrored in the relationship between the actors playing the roles, but the real life Juliet in the end accepts what happens, rather than viewing herself as a tragic heroine.

Chow Sau-Laan is sweet and believable as a rather innocent high school student. Leslie Cheung is characteristically cool and distant, which suits the shallow, narcissistic character that he is portraying.

Teenage Dreamers is an entertaining romantic comedy, not meant to be taken too seriously, with a very good performance by Chow Sau-Laan.
