Badges of Fury (2013)

Summary: Not too bad, but...
A serial killer is stalking Hong Kong. His victims die in unusual ways each with a smile on his face; catching him will be a formidable challenge due to the random manner in which his they die. The killer's methods are diabolical, seemingly haphazard and he strikes from a distance: a diving champion doesn't straighten up from his his spin position, hits the water and floats to the top; a professional dancer is crushed by his overweight partner who had become airborne during their routine; a TV star dies on set and a construction manager falls into a vat of wet cement.

The connection among those killed is that each of them dated and dumped B-list actress Liu Jingshui who becomes the first target of the inept trio of Hong Kong detectives tasked with solving the killings. Attention shifts to Dai Yiyi, Liu's more glamorous sister, a former darts champion who constantly steals Liu's boyfriends. The squad leader is Angela (Michelle Chen). Her subordinates are Huang Fei Hong (Jet Li), a veteran cop who occasionally has to run across the top of a crowd, stepping on shoulders, while in pursuit of a suspect and Wang Bu-er (Wen Zhang) a young, staggeringly incompetent detective. A running gag about who plays the good cop and who the bad cop during interrogations--Wang Bu 'er always gets it wrong--stops being funny after the time it is used,

The characters played by Wen Zhang and Michelle Chen are in an on-again/off-again relationship which should strike sparks but their verbal sparring proves forced and uninteresting, not spirited--they aren't exactly Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. There are the usual references to other movies, for example "Men in Black" represented by, what else, men in black with a special camera, "Internal Affairs" with dizzying shots on top of a building and "Once Upon a Time in China", Jet Li playing Wong Fei-Hung.

"Badges of Fury" isn't bad enough to put in the "don't watch ever" category but isn't good enough to make one want to watch it anytime soon
