Starts as a ghost/horror cheapie, but gradually works up to an extravaganza.
On the down side, the story wanders all over the place and often contradicts itself. And it was disappointing to see Pauline Wong wasted in a part which is little more than occasional decoration. Also, many HK horror films suffer from not being scary, even when horrifying, and this one is no exception. And the editing is sometimes very confusing, which means you'll need to use the rewind button more than once.
However, these are minor quibbles, and the upsides are many. This is an offbeat and original horror film, and the lack of predictability makes for many surprises. You just cannot tell what'll happen next (even having read the plot descrip !). Also, there are some genuinely good to great horror bits. For example, the ghost seduces a pork butcher in truck full of pork carcasses (ugh !) before helping him to join them. And the ghost pulls her face off to convince Michelle to keep away from hubby.
I found the lack of plot sense was easily overcome by the next amusing or surprising horror trick or story turn. And they just keep on coming.
This film pinches from or is influenced by a number of other films. The werewolf transformation from American Werewolf In London features, except it's the lady ghost who does it. And there are strong references to The Exorcist.
The American Hare Krishnas are a scream. They come in with computers, security cameras and a large shipping container. Seeing the high-tech Hare's the climactic battle has to be one of the most enjoyable scenes in any HK film.
There's a fair amount of nudity, with at least three actresses getting topless. There are several sex scenes (though discreet) and Siu Yuk Lung jumps around naked (though this is when she's a werewolf !).
This is not a great movie. However, it is offbeat, original and done with a lot of flair.
