The Heartless Lover (1964)
Reviewed by: hkcinema on 1999-12-08
A man who was accused of murdering and dismembering one of his two lovers gets a retrial thanks to public support mustered by a female Christian social worker. His other lover who received the same sentence anguished over her testimony in the coming trial. Told in sometimes jarring sequences of flash-backs before the crime, Clarence Fok is successful in spotlighting the physical attractiveness of his leads (almost angelical beauty) and contrasting it to their debauched and banal lifestyles. Neither a true psychological thriller or an erotic one, Fok shows greater maturity in story-telling here than his previous works. The movie is unfortunately weakened by mundane comical violence near the end. Note: Carrie Ng won the 1993 Golden Horse Best Actress Award for her role (she has four entries for the award that year.)
