Hello! Who Is It? (1994)

Summary: Entertaining
Basically a remake of "Her Vengeance", though not as violent. Anita Lee is beautiful as the hassled hooker May Chan, but doesn't really have much of a screen presence. Lau Ching Wan isn't too bad, but he's not at his best.

Fortunately, there are some terrific performers in the support cast. Ho Ka Kui is great, as always, playing the ringleader of the four telephone linesmen who rape and accidentally kill May Chan. Helena Law Lan is frightening, but not in the way she usually is. She is frighteningly realistic as May's old mother who can no longer control her body, and this is possibly the best performance of her incredibly busy film career. Even Gwai Chung, eternally a bit-part bearded baddie, is convincing as one of the rapists who, for good measure, also cheats on his wife with a mistress.

And speaking of the mistress, I was astonished to see that she's an actress I have long followed. This girl has acted in four other films under at least two different names. She is credited here as Lam Yi, as she also is in Emotional Girl. She is also credited as Hui Pui, as she is in the terrific Underground Banker and the so-so Snake Beauty. And she is not credited in the excellent Screwball '94. "Hello, Who Is It" is the only film in which she does not appear fully nude (she only appears topless).

The title refers to the use of telephones. The rapists are linesmen, who often make random calls for fun. The ghost of May uses phones to take revenge on the guys, and is so successful that those who are still alive run away to a deserted apartment block, and check the place for phone wiring before going inside. May's pursuit of the rapists is great stuff, highly entertaining and even a bit scary at times (quite unusual in a HK horror movie !). Lau Ching Wan as the cop has the job of pursuing May to try and stop her.

Well worth watching.
