Up for the Rising Sun (1997)

The plot has already been sufficiently covered by an earlier review, so I'll just post my thoughts.

Firstly, I was surprised that the film was made in 1997, because when viewing it I was convinced it was an 80s film. The film for most part is mildly interesting, except that the large financial transactions occurred too fast for me to comprehend fully before they finished. It was unfortunate that the financial transactions dealing with the Cosmos company were the - climax, somewhat - of the film because it didn't allow the characters to evolve beyond their typical "stock" personalities - for instance, the spoilt, wilful young girl, and the resigned, rich father. There were also a few loose ends which I thought were concluded unsatisfactorily. For instance, Tung Ching's massive debt is solved by her...miscarriage? What's up with that? (apart from maybe a sublime reminder to ruthless women that bad things will happen to women who wish to be dominant, but maybe that's me being too much of a paranoid feminist). And one last thing that annoyed me - why did they dub George Lam's voice?!

But as I said before, I still found this movie to be mildly interesting. For one, it's always interesting to watch people act as though they were playing monopoly, but with realy money. I also found the acting on the whole was solid, which always improves the watchability of a film. So to sum up, this isn't a bad film by any means, but not one I'd put on the top of my viewing list.
