Just Married (1995)

Just Married is the unoriginal story of a young man (Emil Chau) in love with a woman (Anita Yuen), whilst trying to deal with the awful mother, and her treatment of her daughter-in-law. It’s been done many times before, and is a very well used idea that had become too much by the time this film came out. There is not much to tell on the story as it is practically non-existent, and you can pretty much guess what it is like if you’ve seen these kind of films before.

Lydia Shum is perfect for the part of the mother-in-law, probably as she has played similar roles before. Emil Chau is very boring as usual, and it just doesn’t seem to be real enough when you see it all on the screen…I mean, how could someone like Anita Yuen be matched up with the rather whiny, wimpy Emil Chau. Beats me. The way they meet and suddenly get on, is just so unrealistic.

All in all, it is okay, but this is far from good as far as Anita Yuens performance, she is usually much better. I don’t think that either her or Emil Chau were the right people to be in this, but as far as comedy goes it is not too bad, but it really does drag at some points for me. Still, it was 1995, and the whole HK film industry was very poor that year.
