Inspector Chocolate (1986)

Summary: Good
Inspector Chocolate basically tells the story of 2 cops, trying to track down a TV cook show hosts son who has been kidnapped, with plenty of trouble for the Hui brothers to get into.

First off, this is a comedy (part of the ‘Mr Boo’ movies), and it is quite silly at times, so if you don’t like such films, then don’t bother reading the rest of this. Otherwise, keep reading, because it is quite amusing for one of those mid 80’s ‘anything goes’ action/comedies.

The film starts off with the 2 cops making a mess (a big mess) as they try to arrest some car thieves, and end up wrecking half of Hong Kong. Their chief is not happy, and as predictable as it gets, they are given less important duties to do, and the duo are given a new partner, played by Anita Mui (the chiefs daughter). They are not happy with her, as she soon gets under their feet.

Sibelle Hu plays a TV host on a cookery show, and is a big star in Hong Kong. However, one day her son is suddenly grabbed off the streets one day for what seems to be no apparent reason – but goes on to be much more serious than they first expected, and they keep meeting dead ends. The only witness is her other son, who the cops are trying to protect at the same time as looking for his brother. But they get into so much trouble whilst turning Hong Kong upside down looking for him.

Sibelle Hu actually acts very well in this, as does Tai Bo, though he doesn't get on the screen until near the end.

Story apart, it’s full of jokes, most of which are pretty stupid, but brings a smile to my face every time I watch it. I’ve seen this one several times over the years, and I do think it is quite funny. But some parts of the film are too slow, and certainly gets boring half way through, but does get better again. It’s not to be taken too seriously though. Overall, not bad, hard to find I think, but worth it if you do.
