Whampoa Blues (1990)

Summary: Has its moments.
Though the Whampoa Blues is clearly a copy of the Police Academy films, it is entertaining at the best of times.

The film is basically about a group of men training at the military academy in Taiwan. As expected, most of it is the men messing around playing jokes on each other and their superior. Though some serious acting parts should not be laughed at, including a good performance by Wilson Lam & Kenny Ho. The action scenes are pretty good too, which would explain why Blacky Ko was not only the director but the action director too. He also makes a rather pointless cameo too, though I’m sure most of the stunts for Max Mok was really done by Ko.

All in all, not too bad, but it’s all been done before. Though I can certainly think of plenty worst movies using this plot.
