Nepal Affair (1986)

Summary: Great
Perhaps one of the strangest films I ever saw from Hong Kong, but strange doesn’t necessarily mean bad. In fact, I think most people would enjoy it if they saw it.

Joe (Chow Yun Fat) and his girlfriend Ida (Nam Kit Yin) travel to Nepal on holiday, and all seems well and fine. That is until a strange woman (Emily Chu) bumps into him, and seems to be following him around. He doesn’t realise it, but he has inherited supernatural powers that pose a threat to the woman. So Joe starts experiencing problems and strange possessive powers as the women pursues him, and ends up loosing consciousness after she attacks him.

Next thing he knows, he’s back in Hong Kong in hospital, with little idea as to what happened, but feels that he must return to find out who or what this women is. But before he does, she ends up in Hong Kong too, in the same hospital in fact. Without saying a word to each other though, they are soon flying around the room, with Joe not knowing what is happening to him. Though she doesn’t speak Chinese, they soon manage to communicate in their own ways, by sending a spirit inside his body. He soon find out that it is not her he should be fearing, but the evil witch master (Dick Wei) from another realm who is trying to take the power away and use it himself. Things begin to get scary (well, for them anyway) when they break down in a cemetary and are attacked by zombies!

Many funny sequences follow throughout the film, as Joe trys everything to work out the secret of the women. It ends up being very enjoyable indeed. I can see why some of the reviewers might not like it, but to most people I think they would enjoy it, as long as you don’t take it too seriously that is.

Like I said at the beginning, this is a very strange film, but there is so much to like about it. An interesting enough story, with good settings, though not much real acting going on. The cheap special effects look stupid by today’s standards, but for back then, it’s reasonably impressive I must say! It’s a little like a modern day Chinese Ghost Story, so if you liked that movie, you may like this one too.

This is better known as 'The Witch From Nepal' if you try to track it down.
