The Mummy, Aged 19 (2002)

What a bizarre movie! And I mean that in a good way!

In some ways, this film sort of reminded me of Wilson Yip's earlier Bio Zombie, except that this time he doesn't have the comic genius of Sam Lee to help pull off this insane and intentionally silly plot. Instead, we are left with the rather unconvincing Wyman Wong, as well as Wong You Nam (who was great in Just One Look, and once again steels the movie here). They play friends who stumble upon two mummies at a mansion where Wyman is working as a security guard. Of course there's also an ancient curse, the mummies come to life and soon Wyman is possessed.

Being possessed by the spirit of a mummy is not helpful when you're trying to court a girl, especially since this particular mummy is prone to fartlike odours. So we have lots of slapstick involving unpleasant scents, along with a hilariously love-obsessed Christian priest and the weirdest family I've seen on screen in a long time.

All of this is told on a showstring budget, and it even manages to produce a few chuckles here and there, but in the end this film is a mostly forgettable horror comedy that does manage to produce a few moments of surreal brilliance.

Marginal recommendation.
