Chow Yun-fat hospitalised

BEIJING - CHOW Yun-fat says he had to check himself into a Beijing hospital earlier this week after catching a cold while shooting an US$18 million (S$24 million) Chinese frontier film.

The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star told reporters at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday that he took a two-day break from filming Chinese director Jiang Wen’s upcoming movie Let the Bullets Fly for treatment.

In a self-deprecating joke about his age, the 54-year-old Chow said he had to receive medical treatment after filming scenes with younger male Chinese actors.

‘I couldn’t take it any more,’ Chow said, adding the younger actors were ’simply too brilliant.’ Hong Kong’s Emperor Motion Pictures publicist Yip Kin-ping later said Chow was put on an intravenous drip after catching a cold from shooting in and near Beijing.

In the film, Jiang plays a bandit chief who tries to take over a remote provincial town in 1920s China, only to meet resistance from a tyrannical local businessman played by Chow.

Chow made his name with stylish Hong Kong gangster thrillers like A Better Tomorrow before making his Hollywood debut with the 1998 action movie The Replacement Killers. His other American credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and Dragonball Evolution. — AP

Chinese directors pay tribute to quake-hit city

In the same style as the anthology films “New York, I Love You” and “Paris, I Love You,” two Chinese filmmakers have profiled a Chinese city that was hit by a massive earthquake last year.

“Chengdu, I Love You” was conceived as a tribute to the southwestern city in Sichuan province that was decimated by a 7.9-magnitude quake in May 2008, leaving nearly 90,000 people dead or missing, Hong Kong director Fruit Chan said.

‘Informed sources’ report that Zhang Ziyi has indeed been retained to play Tony Leung’s wife in Wong Kar-Wai’s First Generation Master. Zhang Ziyi, through her manager, denied the rumor yesterday. Elsewhere, it’s been reported that Wong Kar-Wai is under a lot of pressure as Ip Man was a big box office success and will now compete against Ip Man 2. The casting of Zhang Ziyi is viewed as a counterstrike. Ip Man’s son was asked about the pair, he said, ‘Both Lynn Xiong and Zhang Ziyi are very thin. My mother was similiar in build (?). I have not seen Zhang Ziyi’s acting but Lynn Xiong in Ip Man was pretty good.’

Brigitte Lin reportedly turned down a role because it was not tailor-made for her. Chang Chen is said to play Bruce Lee. Filming is now slated to commence in November.

Like independent filmmakers everywhere, Mr. Zhao worked with no guarantee of an audience, or even a place to show his work. By his estimates only a few thousand people have seen “Ghost Town” in China since he finished it last year. Several hundred more are scheduled to see it Sunday afternoon when the film has its international premiere at the New York Film Festival.

Ang Lee says he’s baffled by ‘Woodstock’ results

The Message hits theaters for National Day

The movie was directed by Gao Qunshu from the mainland and Chen Kuofu from Taiwan. According to Chen, the movie was filmed to tell the destinies of people involved in China’s Anti-Japanese Aggression War (1937-1945)…

The plot of the film was inspired after a murder mystery game, in which one tries to guess who is “killing” the others in the group. However, the film is more solemn than the game, as heroes and heroines in the movie are tortured both physically and spiritually in a bid to fulfill their purposes.

Brigitte Lin
Brigitte Lin recalls 3 triad encounters in latest column for Southern Weekend [apologies for the poor translation]

1. In 1981, she returned to Taiwan for three years where she shot 14 films many for triad bosses. Even if Brigitte did not want to, what could she say? One night a gangster delivered a bag full of cash to her worth NT$2.5M. After he left, Brigitte put the money in a small safe and deposited it the next day. At the time her family was living in America [for safety?] and she was alone in Taiwan.
2. Blackmail: On a film shoot, during a break in a dressing room a low level gangster asked her to lend him some money. She pretended not to understand him and cleverly turned to Derek Yee for help. The gangster then gave up.
3. Because of gang harassment, many film shoots employ ‘bodyguards’. The production crew was always ready for self-defense. The atmosphere was tense but fun recalls Brigitte. On one film her bodyguard had a knife scar. Brigitte’s nickname was Little Rose, so her bodyguard was called Little Knife Scar Rose. Filming a gun scene in front of a restaurant, Knife Scar Rose jumped out pointing his gun thinking that it was real.
