That second article on Zhang Ziyi's iimproving English is a tough one. It leads by saying that her English is getting better and then quotes several other articles concerning how poor her diction and enunciation has been recently.

Very much like damning with faint praise--"you were really terrible recently and now you are better".

Chinese media, if this is a good example, are awfully tough on Chinese celebrities.

Ever read some of the actor bios on Hong Kong DVDs? Those things can be BRUTAL sometimes. They literally BLAME the actor or actress for any misfortune that has befallen their careers, often suggest what needs improving for them to ever achieve respect, and have been known to included veiled putdowns of Chinese actors who were born overseas or - God forbid - the product of inter-ethnic marriages, as though both conspire to keep them "outsiders" in their own industry. Fascinating stuff to read, though.
