Chen Kaige's high-minded comment in that Toronto Sun interview is telling of his attitude toward Hong Kong cinema, the very existence and history of which all but GAVE his latest movie its popularity:

"The Hong Kong industry is almost finished," he says. "The five nominations for Hong Kong Oscars this year, three of the five were in Mandarin Chinese (the Mainland's official dialect). Chinese cinema can be very important in the future."
