THE gambling issue – be it in a gangster movie, a comedy or a love story – has been done to death in Hong Kong movies.
But still, Hong Kong studios come up with more.
With director /actor Wong Jing at the helm of My Wife is a Gambling Maestro, you can expect this movie to be a comedy. But there are no fresh takes to speak of.
This is mainly a rehash of past successes. The only refreshing thing about it is the pairing of Hong Kong's Nick Cheung with mainland China's Natalie Meng. And even that is a sorry affair from start to finish.
Cheung is a versatile actor who is simply wasted in this flick. He is zombie-like for the most part and worse, is saddled with a bad wig. His sidekick, Cheung Tat Ming, who has made a name for himself as a comedic actor, is true to form here.
He is often cast as a low-class character and with his seedy looks, his role here is right up his alley.
The movie revolves around a too-gentle debt collector Chou (Cheung). Together with his two cronies, Ku (Cheung) and Yi (Cheung Ka Lun), they try to act tough on their rounds but fail miserably.
Chou also has to contend with his temperamental girlfriend who is out to squeeze him dry.
When he finally ends the relationship, he goes out and gets drunk with his buddies.
He then comes across a mysterious woman on the beach who has lost her memory. The inevitable happens — the two fall in love.
Chou's bubble bursts when he discovers that the light of his life is none other than gambling whiz Lung Ying Ying (Meng). And if there's one thing he can't stand, it is gambling!
However, there is a gambling battle – the Asian God of Gamblers Competition — that she must compete in. The movie centres not so much on the gambling sessions but on the two lovers' supposedly hilarious relationship. But the gags fall flat and there are many sexual innuendos throughout, which are in bad taste and offensive.
This is clearly a man's movie, which not only puts women in a bad light but also renders them putty in men's hands. There are plenty of scantily-clad women for the men to gawk at.
There is hardly any acting credibility to speak of and mental stimulation is absent. Basically, it is tasteless fare and totally forgettable.
