This looks like a good show, but I have to ask, are camera flashes and audience chatter a common part of Chinese stage performances? I'd think that would be a major distraction to the talent. Do that in these parts and you're out without a refund. Then again, I suppose they're used to the glare and the noise in real life, so why no on stage? (or is the "chattering" built into the soundtrack of the play for context??)

If you can make it in [strike]New York City[/strike] the Mainland, you can make it anywhere!

I'd venture to say that it's not surprising or unusual. Church weddings are another venue where photography bans seems to be ignored.

Then again, it may not necessarily be a Chinese monopoly, if you've been to your neighborhood movie theatre lately.

You ain't kiddin'.

Speaking as a reasonably regular patron, though, stage shows in this town, including ones with "name" performers, usually command high enough ticket prices that people pipe down and turn off their cameras and phones. Perhaps Julian, Charlene et. al. need to tour their show over here. :D Then again, now that the whole thing's online for free . . .

I'm reminded of a couple of things..

As Todd pointed out, cell-phone talkers have been received badly in theaters on Broadway. In the middle of one of his productions, Kevin Spacey turned to a person who answered a cell phone and said, "Tell them you're busy." Actor Laurence Fishburne, in the middle of a performance, yelled to a member of the audience, "Turn your fucking phone off!"

I'd find it difficult to not start cracking skulls if I was watching a play and people started talking on the phone and loudly to each other, and taking lots of pictures.
