I'm beginning to think the Great Firewall of China should go up and with even stricter rules. Now no pictures or forums!

Partly, I think, because we're jaded by TMZ, sex tapes, etc and

If Zhang Ziyi was intimate with a Chinese person on the beach, she would be guilty only of being "skittish." But she did it with a white man, and that is of a completely different nature.

The latter, a more significant cause for the uproar, I suspect.

No doubt. Shame that's even an issue nowadays, for people on either side of the ethnic divide . . .

I'm not sure this would even qualify as a "-gate" in some quarters! Celebrity boobies are old hat over here I guess. Sometimes look like them, too! :D

Not simple as pure racism, in my opinion. I take it as a festering remnant of The Opium Wars. This type of thing cuts deeply across the grain of Chinese national pride.

Now, the latest twist:

What's really ironic is that just a few days ago, there was a proposal to drop the OAT altogether in HK.

You're right, some commentary surrounding this "issue" does seem rooted in deeper issues, but is something (anything) as superficial as this all it takes to stoke the fires of nationalism these days? :( . Seems like opportunism regardless of culture. She's an actress, a celebrity, with a storied past no less, and yet someone still expects her to be the bastion of national decency because history dictates it must be so? Western military missteps or political gaffes make good catalysts for nationalist fervour in a lot of countries, but "naughty" snaps from a celebrity's mixed relationship? Sigh.

I was at a nearby mega-Chinese grocery store today and there at the checkout for all to see--and cat about--was a Hong Kong gossip rag with the ViviZiyi pictures plastered huge all over the cover (and no doubt inside), including the bum-nibbling shot. Buying up the rights to the photos was probably the only (and best) thing Nevo could do, although I'm sure they've been downloaded to a bazillion hard drives already or, failing that, scanned by some enterprizing perv from any of the magazines that have now clearly circled the globe!

I thought they looked pretty happy together, not that it's any of my business . . . ;)

It didn't appear that the magazine was exactly flying off the racks at the checkouts I passed on my way out, though that's hardly an accurate survey. I'm prone to believe it's one of those things where no one really wants to be caught adding "that" to their pile of groceries! Either that, or no one really cares that much, which is as it should be.
