Sally Yeh's movie songs

Sally Yeh's movie songs

Postby STSH » Mon Nov 21, 2005 10:28 pm

I'm a big fan of the matron of Cantopop, Sally Yeh.

I have one of her greatest hits tapes (the one with the purple cover). It's in storage, so I can't get at it atm.

However, I have been trying for years to identify all the songs on it. Most particularly, which of these songs belong to movies.

I know of two.

One is a re-recorded (and, unfortunately, very inferior) version of the love theme in Chinese GHost Story.

The other is the main theme from Peking Opera Blues.

Does anyone know of any other songs on this album, or elsewhere, which were used in movies ?

Also, Cantopop and movie music is a potentially popular topic.
How about a separate form for them ?

I'd say!

I'm all for that. My cantopop collection isn't huge, but it's sizeable. I don't usually know what they're singing, and sometimes I can only vaguely recall the movie in which I first heard a song, but I must confess to being moderately hooked on the stuff.

I'd also say that more than in any other cinema in the world (save perhaps India's), Hong Kong pop music and Hong Kong cinema are inextricably married as they often seem to trade in overblown emotion, syrupy-sweet melancholy, and chest-pounding pride. Often (though not always) you can suss out the emotions of a cantopop tune without ever needing to know the lyrics. Some would say this is because so much of it is sond-alike treacle, but I'd disagree.

One of the things that used to frustrate me about the old Asian cinema forums at Mobius was the automatic closing of threads when people would digress into discussions of cantopop - discussions about films from an industry where easily 75% of the top stars are bloody pop stars! Pretty sad the eggshells I used to have to walk on over there. One would quickly be informed that other sites existed for the discussion of Hong Kong music were one interested in such a discussion - and indeed they did, but the few I found were literally about the discussion of the music and decidedly NOT about how interwoven it is with Hong Kong film.

Personally, I'd welcome such an addition here. Not sure how much I could contribute since I'm not as good with album and song titles as many contibutors here, but I know what I like!

流金歲月 is one other song by Sally from the movie of the same name starring Maggie Cheung & Cherrie Chung from the 80's. It's a great song, one of my faves by Sally Yeh.

Thanks for the song titles here and in your other thread. Those will help me expand my cantopop library.

And welcome to the forums.
