The Bus Uncle saga takes another strange turn.

Original 5/25 news and video links

Lessons from the Bus Uncle incident

Hong Kong takes rotten rant to heart

In previous episodes, BU was arrested for harrassing a couple girls/prostitutes on a bus. Might be actually two separate incidents.
(see youtube.com)

The BU surfaced to do some interviews and also sing at a Karaoke bar.
(3 parts on youtube.com)

Recently, 3 guys beat up the BU.

And now this latest item:

Just got done reading this English translation of a Bus Uncle interview/aritcle from the EastSouthWestNorth site (posted somewhere else in the forums I believe) and I'm even more shocked that some cunning Hong Kong filmmakers haven't jumped all over this loser's dubious but entertaining life story. It's been over a month now. In 1994, there would have been at least two films already under production.

We'll it'd be a lock that Spencer Lam is destined to play the Bus Uncle.
Before, he was identified, his resemblance to Lam was noted and a video was made of Lam with BU's audio dubbed over.

But this one is still one of my favorites:

Funny stuff! Love that Spencer Lam commercial. I guess a TV spot'll have to do these days, but one can still imagine an entire feature film being churned out back in the day, as they say. Lam does seem a bit old for the part, since Bus Uncle is a rather young looking 51, but there is a bit of a resemblance.

That puppet skit is pretty inventive. It's amazing how much potential this whole incident affords people. It's been a while since anything has captured the zeitgeist in such a way over on this side of the pond, especially something that wasn't created and marketed to capture the zeitgeist with a hip sense of ironic detachment. There's a purity to Bus Uncle and those that are cashing in on his fame that I actually admire.

Does Hong Kong have any sketch comedy shows? It'd be killer to see the Bus Uncle Saga parodied in the style various Hong Kong directors like Johnnie To (an epic argument in which both characters die at the end), Wong Kar-wai (both characters meet repeatedly on the bus, but fail to resolve their pressures), Herman Yau/Billy Tang (Bus Uncle kills Elvis Ho and Alvin the camera-phone guy and feeds them to his unsuspecting girlfriend and her son, then is beaten into confessing by Danny Lee), Ringo Lam (BUS ON FIRE in which Elvis is an undercover cop and Bus Uncle is a triad kingpin he's sworn to bring down, and their meeting on the bus, a la Deniro and Pacino in HEAT is only the prelude to a massive shootout involving all the other passengers) or John Woo (same as Ringo Lam version, only with doves)

Lift Auntie doesn't have quite the mythic cinematic potential of the bus uncle saga, but perhaps we'll see a sequel in which the camera guy feels her full force...

Man, what next? Subway Mama?

Yeah, I should have warned you it wasn't that great. At least it was pretty short.

Not really, at least there are some "fighting" scenes which "Bus Uncle" doesn't have.

I think Josie Ho should play her! I know she doesn't really look like Lift Auntie (not too many Hong Kong actresses do, I'm afraid), but Josie looked good kicking ass in TWINS EFFECT and HOUSE OF FURY, and she has that voice.

Perhaps they could make Lift Auntie a throwaway gag in the Bus Uncle movie: at the end of the movie, just as his life is getting back to normal, he heads back to his messy flat and just as the elevator doors close, a hand slices in to open them again. Lift Auntie! Cut to black...prep the sequel!

Wasn't sure where to post this, but since this seems to be the only place we discussed the original "Bus Uncle" I figured it would be OK to post this funny bit about the latest Bus Uncle, who picked a fight with the wrong Gwailo recently. Hopefully this won't set relations back between our peoples  :

The subways here are so boring in comparison. :P

Yeah, generally speaking, the only interesting thing on the Toronto subway is probably this:

And no, I don't participate! And I also think it should be limited to girls only, but I know that's not a popular sentiment.
