Reviewed by: magic-8 Date: 05/13/2004 Summary: Silly Romantic Comedy Joe Ma's "Sound of Colors" is a fully contrived piece of filmmaking, made specifically as a feel-good Christmas/New Year's holiday movie. The primary tale is about matchmaker (Tony Leung) and a blind girl (Miriam Yeung), while the secondary story concerns Chang Chen's christmas card mix up leading to an association with a heartbroken woman (Tung Jei ) from Shanghai. All the characters are brought together by an angel, played by Fan Jik Wai. "Sound of Colors" feels like "Chungking Express" light. The many writers, Joe Ma Wai-Ho, Cheung Pui Wah, Chan Wing Sun and Wong Nga Man, spoil the soup with thin ideas and even thinner plot elements. The script seems as if it were written on an overnight, pajama-party sleepover. There are some nice moments in "Sound of Colors," mostly supplied by Miriam Yeung in a very restrained performance. Tony does a capable job but his character undergoes some psychosomatic blindness that really tries the audience's patience and patronizes the audience's intelligence. The music for this movie is as cloying and syrupy as ever. This is a movie by Joe Ma, the king of the schmaltz, afterall. There are many plot inconsistencies but the movie isn't long enough to consider the stuff that doesn't add up. You take the bloopers for what they are and move on. Overall, "Sound of Colors" is a painless romantic-comedy that is entertaining enough while you are watching it, but quickly forgotten. The movie could have been a notch better if the producers and the director had plugged up the plot holes and removed the contradictory exposition. The movie teeters from harmless to just plain silly.
