Summary: When being righteous doesn't help you...
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is a (rather self-righteous) journalist writing for a local rag, starts to write openly about the local Triads running the police through backhanders and driving the circulation of his paper up. Triad/cop finds out, offers to bribe him, he refuses out of a sense of moral outrage and the need to expose the truth, so cop frames him and has him sent to prison. Will he survive his sentence? His time in prison is well documented and at times you wonder how he carries on - not just because of the other inmates, most of whom are either Triads themselves or protected by them. The prison warders are just as bad, and just as corruptable. His story of how he survives and is ultimately released, as well as how his loved ones on the outside fare, are riveting stuff. Tony Leung is great as always, and this must be the first time an actor has cried on screen and I've wanted to cry for him (apart from Bullet in the Head!).
