Troublesome Night 18

Okay, I admit that I'm a bit behind in this series, but I've never really been a huge fan of HK ghost stories, and these movies seemed a bit dopey. However, pickings have been a bit slim to say the least for HK movies lately, so I decided to check out the latest entry. While it's not a horror classic or even really that scary, Troublesome Night 18 is a enjoyable bit of semi-scary fluff -- which probably explains why they keep cranking these movies out at the rate of six per year.

This installment (which, in true cheapie movie fashion, recycles virtually the same cast and crew from the previous installments) focuses on Michael Tong, who plays a gangster who can see ghosts. He saves a girl twice from being blinded and killed by ghosts, so they decide to take revenge by possessing him. It's then up to the everyone's favorite venerable ghost-busting granny Helena Law Lan to save the day.

Troublesome Night 18's plot is really nothing special and the film was shot in the Mainland on digital video, so it looks pretty cheap -- though, to their credit, the film-makers did make the movie look fairly decent, especially considering what they had to work with. The movie really gets by on style, humor, and charm, which it does have a lot of. Ultimately, that's what seperates Troublesome Night 18 from many of the other shot-on-video cheapies slumming around HK nowadays. It never really takes itself too seriously -- this is just meant to be a "popcorn" movie and it succeeds at that.
