Summary: Chang Cheh fawns over Ti Lung

This Shaw Bros. melodrama is about a loner swordsmen drawn into a tragic controversy involving a martial arts clan. It's a vehicle for the young star Ti Lung who is cast in the featured role as the heroic King Eagle. Lovely Li Ching plays a dual role as rival siblings. Now you would think this would be twin sisters but you'd be wrong. The standard Shaw Studio script makes one older than the prettier younger one. A visually compelling film, this is a scenario where things happen quickly; but don't work out so good for anyone.

Chang Cheh was often guilty of having an unnerving fetish for the visceral and as gratuitous as it could be at times at least it was rarely dull. In "King Eagle" the prolific Shaw Brothers director doesn't appear to be particularly interested in bloodletting or anything else for that matter. Everything you see here is Shaw Brothers stock which is fine if you're an addict of the popular studio's output but everyone else will be checking their watches way too much for a film that isn't even 90 minutes long.

***1/2 KING EAGLE: Nice wu xia from Chang Cheh, with Ti Lung and Li Ching in roles that you might expect to see Yueh Hua and Cheng Pei Pei in. Generally well crafted, but nothing that particularly makes it stand out from similar films.

Average flick that left a lot to be desired. This oldie pits Li Ching in dual roles as sisters. Li Ching, as one sister, is a cute, cuddly-type swordswoman who falls for the King Eagle, Chan Fei (Ti Lung). The other sister that Li Ching plays is a rotten, conniving, “evil” sister who is part of a gang out to kill Chan Fei. Chan Fei, whom Ti Lung plays, is Chang Cheh’s perpetual hero. A hero who is a loner that never smiles and only enters into the ruckus due to unforeseen complications. Some losers just could not leave the King Eagle alone! These losers had to go out and ruffle the King Eagle’s feathers by killing his buddy and then involving him and his new squeeze in a plot concerning a power struggle. Foolish! Ultimately, the King Eagle must take on the gang all by his lonesome for destiny’s sake! Bodies are sliced and diced, bruised, and battered. Will the King Eagle overcome? Who cares? This flick is not impressive to me. It’s very dull and uninspiring. If you are having trouble sleeping, pop this flick in and watch. You will be sleeping like a baby.

Ti Lung is King Eagle, a top swordsman and a loner. Normally, even if all of the martial world tear one another apart in front of him, he'll just walk right by. However, this time he has decided to interefere in a conspiracy!
