When Taekwondo Strikes

This female "Fist of Fury" (1972), relocated from Shanghai to Korea, initially doesn't have much going for it: the first third of the film is a sad conglomerate of plain Jane art direction, bland costumes, overcast cinematography, poorly delivered dialogue, and even poorer direction. Thankfully, for a martial arts picture as homely as "When Taekwondo Strikes" (star Angela Mao Ying's natural Taiwanese beauty withstanding) its saving grace is the fist and kick sequences that grow in number during the film's 90 minute trajectory and progressively become more entertaining culminating in what has to be one of the most satisfying meat-and-potatoes finales in Golden Harvest's martial arts library. Jhoon Rhee, the father of Taekwondo in America, co-stars along side his real-life pupil Ann Winton in their only screen credits to date. Both were discovered by the film's director Wong Fung, who also lent to the early career of co-star and choreographer Sammo Hung.

Non-stop fisticuffs are the order of the day in this solid old-school flick that has a group of Korean rebels led by Jhoon Rhee taking on the local corrupt Japanese. I don't really have too much to say about this movie, even though it is quite good. The script and plot won't win any awards, but the actors do well with what they have to work with and they look great during the fights, especially Angela Mao, who is always a treat to watch.

Summary: great movie for Angela Mao fans!

This movie is a classic! Angela Mao is clearly the main star in this movie. She proves her femme fatale status by kicking the crap out of a whole bunch of Japanese bad guys.
My favorite scene is Angela's first fighting scene where she is confronted by a group of Japanese thugs in a church. The head thug makes the unfortunate mistake of making a lude comment regarding Chinese women which ignites Angela's fury. After easily knocking out about 7 guys, the head thug makes the mistake of engaging her in combat. Angela kicks him silly and then corners him at the bottom of a stairwell. The head thug is clearly overmatched by Angela. She forces the thug up the stairs until they reach top. She punches him at least four times in the chest and then savagely throughs him down the stairs. Then, Angela jumps down kicks him another three times in the chest, slaps him behind a door, closes the door on him, yanks the bloodied thug to the stair handle and chops him in the back about three times. Then, she knees him in the back and takes his feet out from a kick. And, finally, delivers a bone-crushing foot stomp to his throat. The thug gasps briefly before succumbing to Angela's crushing foot. With action like that who wouldn't see this movie.
