This flick is very similar story wise to Boxer from Shantung, another flick that Chen Kuan Tai starred in. In this flick, Ma Ching Wing (Chen Kuan Tai) and Ching Fu Sang (Lung Fong) come to Shanghai to make it big. Ma Ching Wing rises to top and becomes a Big Boss in charge of a pier in the French district of Shanghai. Ma Ching Wing does not rule with an iron hand like his predecessors so quickly becomes the most liked boss around. Meanwhile, Ma Ching Wing’s second-in-charge, Ching Fu Sang, feels that “Dai Lo” is soft and needs to exert his influence by being more “tough”—rough up the locals, show less compassion. Things turn sour when another “Big Boss”, Lam (Chen Sing), sows the seeds of envy and greed by turning Ching Fu Sang against Ma Ching Wing. Eventually, the two best friends duel it out at Lam’s house to see who will come out as the Big Boss of Shanghai.
