Aces Go Places II

Summary: Robot Wars

More hijinx with King Kong (Sam Hui), Baldy (Karl Maka) and Nancy (Sylvia Chang). This time the villain is known as White Gloves, who is seeking revenge for the defeat of Black Gloves in the original (I wonder how much time was spent brainstorming THAT idea!). Along for the ride are a Clint Eastwood impersonator (who is called Filthy Harry, but is actually dressed like his character from Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy for some reason!), a Japanese gang boss (Kurata Yasuaki) and his conniving sister who continually dupes King Kong into committing acts of robbery, and an FBI agent (Tsui Hark, no less) who shows that Care in the Community just isn’t working. More gadgets than the last time, and some fairly painful looking stunts, but the gags are still the star of the show.

The first sequel to the ACES GO PLACES film opens with some not terribly convincing special effects when a giant robot storms King Kong’s apartment. But thankfully the actual amount of robot fighting in the whole film doesn’t take up too much screen time – and believe me, that’s a good thing.

In fact, what surprises me is the level of the stuntwork. Following the incident with the robot death-machine is a high-powered motorbike chase that is quite ahead of its time and involves a lot of reasonably dangerous manoeuvres. And all this before we’ve hit the 10-minute mark!

When the film settles down, it’s still the same team of the three stars that hold the film together. Baldy is now engaged to Nancy, although the wedding doesn’t quite go to plan. The plot is extremely basic and is just an excuse to string a bunch of comedy and/or action scenes together, but that’s part of its charm.

There are a few standout scenes, but the nightclub demolition fight is an obvious highlight and contains some genuine inventiveness in its comic approach. It also looks as if it was extremely painful to shoot!

It might not be high art, but the ACES series did have its moments, and there are quite a few of them in this instalment.

Summary: baldy and king kong strike back...

well, this is a little sillier and a little more far fetched than the first film, but equally, if not more enjoyable. there's a great dynamic between the three main characters which is where a lot of the film's strength lies, although the robots, silly cars and motorbikes also add to the fun.

good stuff, and i look forward to the next three in the series.

Summary: Much much more hilarious than the first part..

Karl Maka and Sam Hui split cars, while Karl maka bounches of car hoods, and helps Hui fight off giant robots with an army of pocket sized robotic heroes, while Yasuaki Kurata plans gold heists, while the Clint Eastwood lookalike tries to get his Cantonese Eastwood voice working, while police chief Walter Tso swallows a dog whistle and whistles his orders away! Much much more hilarious than the first part, loaded with outrageously hilarious comedic scenes and gimmicks! Karl Maka holds this movie together with great talent, he owns this movie with his hilarious scenes and his impeccable timing! The robots are cute and funny! Well paced, with well written comedic elements, perfect timing, and talent make this one of the best entries in the series so far, as I haven't seen the rest of the series yet! Highly recommended! The English subbed version is the best way to see this movie, in order to appreciate the original dialogue, which is witty and hilarious. 5/5

Summary: Boring

Maybe it's the age of the film; maybe it's just a bad film, but it's down right boring. One review said this is "still one of the funniest movies ever." Unfortunately, I couldn't agree less. Movies like Peking Opera Blues and Fong Sai Yuk are simply much more humorous than Aces Go Places 2.

Fortunately, it's not all bad, and there are some nice scenes here and there. If 80s comedy is your thing, you should pick this up, but otherwise you should consider another title.

Summary: Bad

The first was never a classic, but compared to this it should be! Part 2 is like watching paint dry, it's painfully boring.

The action is very limited and the jokes are not nearly as good as Sam & Karl's better works.

Summary: Mighty disappointing

I was expecting a lot, after reading the above two reviews.
This film tries very hard to be fast-paced and wacky. But I found that, with the expection of the robot scenes (which are a scream), it was mostly just very stupid.
Overall : Quite a feelgood movie, but a shade below average, and very cringy.

King Kong, expert thief, is forced to reteam with Baldie (aka Kodojack/Kodijack) in order to save his ass from a Clint Eastwood lookalike "Filthy Harry," hired by Henry Kissenger (a look-alike!)! Tons of robots, kung-fu and romantic trists. Hilariously entertaining. A classic.

Transformer robots, high-speed scooter and car chases, wildstunts, and tons of Keystone Cops humor meld somehow in this unbelievably fast-paced science-fiction-crime-adventure-comedy-work-of-genius thing. As if that weren't plenty, it's also fitted with a soundtrack that'll keep you whistlin' for days. Wah!
