The Young Hero of Shaolin II

Summary: Not as good as Part 1

This one is more uneven. The first 25 minutes and parts of the following half hour are dull and lacking focus and, most amazingly, not much concerned with the title character ! FSY gets lost in the crowd quite often in the first hour, and the film suffers greatly for it.

The final half hour is impressive. There's a surreal Busby Berkeley style choreographed sequence featuring a gang of guys with cymbals around a yinyang symbol, and FSY with some monks trying to disrupt their harmony.

The skill level of the fu scenes, of course, is superb. Many of the cast are the genuine article.

Verdict - watch it, but keep the fast-forward button handy.

Summary: ****

This is a good movie. Fong Sai Yuk just gets back from Siu Lam Ji and has mastered the two finger hand stand. He teams up with a friend who is good and some eagle claw boxing. This movie is kind of old (somewhere in the 80's), but the action scenes are good. The characters are great which will make you want to keep watching the movie again. The girls are so cute when they fight. The two finger stand, the running across water, and the praying mantis are some highlights. (This movie was re-released in the WuTang video collection they retitled it as IRON MAN. The pictures on the back are from part I but the movie is actually part II. It is English Dubbed.)

Older movie, probably early eighties, about Chinese folkhero Fong Sai Yuk. It's interesting to see that many of the elements of the FSY films with Jet Li are already there (running over the heads of a crowd, Fong's mom, the "Tiger Lu" character) but otherwise this is not much of a movie. Some good, fast kung fu though.
