Summary: Awful waste of talent

Further proof that a great cast doesn't necessarily make a great film. I agree with Brian (see link) that Maggie Cheung is the only one worth watching, and unfortunately her part is rather small and scattered.

Certainly the silly script is a big problem, but I think the characterizations are the big fault. Jacky Cheung plays a weak wimp, Pat Ha is a confused and rather angry fiancee, Carol Cheng's character is ridiculously guarded of her young brother as though he's a total imbecile, and Nat Chan tries to be likeable ! All of these actors are playing against type, and failing, and their characters collide with each other with results which are more often nasty than fun.

The grand old lady Tang Bik Wan manages to be amusing and watchable sometimes, but it's not enough. I couldn't watch past 45 minutes, and even that was an effort.

Summary: Romantic/Ghost comedy

Sister Cupid is a romantic comedy, starring Jacky Cheung, Dodo Cheng & Maggie Cheung. It’s got a story to it too though, making it more interesting to watch than a lot of similar movies to this made during the 80’s, but it’s a bit confusing.

Kit (Jacky Cheung) accidentally stumbles upon a house after his motorbike went out of control, and a girl (Maggie Cheung) helps him on his feet, then disappears. Jacky is caught between more women then he might want. His female friend who has now moved next door (Pat Ha) who likes him, his sister (Dodo) and the mysterious girl who helped him. Dodo causes problems for him though, as she doesn’t like the girl.

Although it’s not clear why, Dodo investigates the house to find out about the girl, but discovers that she drowned years earlier. So Maggie Cheung turns out to be a ghost. Dodo is asked by the dead girls mother to find a man for her dead daughter to marry (the mother is crazy, and doesn’t seem to realise her daughter is dead). So who better to choose than Jacky! However, both Jacky & Dodo discover that they are the only ones who can see the girl, even though she is dead. Which leads to some quite funny scenes at a party, including Jacky dancing with himself etc.

It gets a bit stupid after that, for me anyway, and quickly looses its appeal. The 'special effects' are so low budget, you will laugh more at them (especially the blow-up doll which is supposed to be Maggie!).

With everyone pretty much in the early stages of their movie careers, they certainly don’t do a bad job in this film. A lot of it is funny, but there are a lot of jokes that don’t turn out as funny as may be they were supposed to be. Still, not a bad film, for 1987 anyway, but the whole concept is a bit stupid.

Stars a young Jackie Cheung whose sister is played by Dodo Cheng.I think Sylvia Cheng plays the girlfriend Dodo don't like. Dodo accidentally marries Jackie Cheung to her boss's dead daughter played by Maggie Cheung. Because of the marriage, Maggie hangs around Jackie's house. Nobody can see her except for the brother and sister. But Sylvia found out about Maggie and after a while finally convinces Dodo that Maggie is a ghost. After the confrontation, Maggie agreed to leave Jackie alone if they replay the events of her death so she can rest in peace.
