Pantyhose Hero

Summary: The beginning of the end...

Deeply homophobic to the point of total ignorance, it seems that in this period of his career Sammo made a conscious effort to piss off as much of his audience as humanly possible - and he succeeded! Even the title is patronising and ignorant to the extreme - so gays wear pantyhose, do they? Every stereotype is here, and there are jolly japes galore about AIDS.

Even in the not-as-politically-correct-as-the-west Hong Kong, this film was seen as a step too far and under performed. It's a shame that there ARE occasional flashes of brilliance in the action, as it's just too difficult to get over the bad taste that this film leaves in the mouth.

So what did Sammo learn from this experience? He went on to make Don't Give a Damn. Oh, brother...

Summary: Good fight scenes surrounded by harsh stereotypes

Basically this is a rehash of the US film "Partners" about two cops having to pretend to be lovers to solve a serial murder case of gays in the city. Alan nearly gets seduced by the gay neighbor, while Sammo nearly blows the case when he falls for a pretty woman he meets.

It may have been a really good movie, but homosexuals are treated very poorly in the movie, with horrible jokes ("AIDs brothers" is the worst), and stereotyped flamy characters who only want sex. Maybe it's funny for Sammo and Alan to do it for a while, but everybody else? It's 1990 too, when it was still illegal to be gay in HK. The only thing to redeem the movie is Sammo's fights and stuntwork. He has a great opening battle with props and chainsaws, a good fight in the middle and painful car stunt and an awesome battle with the villain at the end. It could have been funny for the Sammo and Alan to overplay being gay while everyone else does it realistically, but unfortunately they don't--they needed a better script if they wanted to go with this theme. So you should only see it for the cops stuff and fight scenes. Sorry, Sammo!

Summary: Bad

Sammo Hung’s contrivertial anti-homsexual comedy shouldn’t be watched for so many reasons.

The story starts as Sammo Hung & Alan Tam investigating a brutal murder of a gay couple, and are told to go undercover in order to track down the killer. To do so, they have to learn to be homosexual. It’s 90 minutes of homosexual jokes, most of which are not funny, and at the same time some very brutally violent scenes, all of which seems so out of place for a supposed comedy.

The film shows no realistic views on any homosexuality at all (which can be seen in more serious HK films later), and I think it’s very clear that Sammo had/has a very ignorant attitude when it came to this topic. It’s no surprise this was around the time Sammo Hung started loosing his faithful fans in both Hong Kong and abroad.

It’s not very entertaining even with all the problems put aside, so I have to say I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.

Cop Samo Hung and his partner act like queens in order to find a gay homicidal maniac (cum sushi chef), but get caught up in drug and triad violence. Some rip-roaring fight scenes in between all the prancing, pursed lips, and limp wrists.
