The Attractive One (2004)

Summary: Lightweight, but not throwaway
For fans of Matt Chow and Lau Ching Wan movies, this one seems, in comparison, a bit hastily put together (which in itself says a lot). At times one wonders whether there should have maybe been another take, or the make-up people were off that day...or maybe the approach was deliberate? Or maybe the film was really low budget? It certainly seem to have an amateurish or experimental edge to it.

Moving past the unusual cinematography, the rather simple, yet somehwhat touching, script served as an adequate vehicle for enjoying some pretty solid performances from Lau, Joey and Yumiko. But, without a doubt, Chapman To stole this one rather handily. He was really suited for his part, and was memorably hilarious at times.

Seeing Joey for the reviewer's first time was also enjoyable. She is really an adorable actor. We even get to hear her make an attempt at not being able to sing well--and, well, she fails: she has an incredible voice.

Sure, it's lightweight, but certainly not throw-away. Give it a go, just to see the Chapman performance.
