Up for the Rising Sun (1997)

Summary: NULL
Chiyi Hon (Anita Yuen), the charming daughter of a ruined real estate investor, convinces business magnate William Tong (George Lam) to ally with her on a few business maneuvers, with marriage thrown in as an unbeatable incentive. But she has an ulterior motive: to crush the investor who left her father penniless. Family alliances, mainland investments, predatory women with who use money like Monopoly play-dough...nearly every transaction is carried out in affected coolness, even as the rivals set the full force of their capital to collapse each others' financial empires. It's far-fetched even as it grabs your attention. Yuen is a major draw, as usual, but capital-intensive dramas like this have such a high failure rate for one good reason: you can't really visualize the effects of these abstract monetary wars for long stretches -- only that somebody's getting the shaft for some economic reason that progresses two steps faster than the audience's comprehension kicks in..
