Troublesome Night 6 is a solid entry in the popular horror series. It is different from its predecessors because it is a single story rather than a loosely connected anthology, but shares actors such as Louis Koo and Simon Loui with the earlier movies.

The story is a mystery, with a police detective (Louis Koo) investigating unusual deaths which appear to result from supernatural forces. They seem connected to the apparent suicide of a model several years before, and the police try to avoid the appearance of supporting the press theory that the ghost of the model is seeking revenge. The detective gradually realizes that he was present at the scene of the model's death and may be a target, but cannot recall the events of that night because of an alcoholic blackout.

Troublesome Night 6 has a more serious tone than earlier films in the series, and the atmosphere it creates is more threatening than usual, with several grisly deaths. The victims' roles in the earlier death are gradually revealed, maintaining a sense of suspense. This tends to negate a sense of sympathy for their plights, instead creating the impression that a sort of rough justice is being administered that the legal system could not provide.

Troublesome Night 6 is a change of pace for the series, more scary and violent than usual and lacking any comedy to vary the mood. There is some suspense as to who the next victim will be and why, and the detective's quest to recover his memory of his own involvement in the death of the model adds an unusual aspect to a well-executed but unsurprising tale.
