The Holy Virgin Versus the Evil Dead (1991)

Summary: Good Hybrid of Horror/Action/Fantasy/Adventure
The movie has a lot going for it, and that's the good benefits of low-budget filmmaking. The idea of mixing different genres into one is a very hard task, as you have to sync each of the genre elements and make it work altogether. However, THE HOLY VIRGIN VERSUS THE EVIL DEAD proves that all you need to make success is simply the way you write and direct such a story.

The story may be downright silly -- a monster killing women in a setting that would be best fit for generic action potboilers -- and despite some scenes in the beginning not being told well enough and being compensated by latter scenes, things pick up fast enough for you to understand what's happening and how the story is resolved and culminated convincingly.

The main attraction is the movie being a horror movie. But with the story being inspired by action, fantasy and adventure movies there's so much you can take enjoyment from, and still be amazed at how the film is executed. It's a good meshing of these genres, I would say, where you can just sit back, watch, and enjoy the remarkable experience.

As an avid action movie fan, I'm not disappointed at all. It has enough action scenes to make me rewatch the movie from time to time. Having Donnie Yen, Ben Lam, and Ken Lo -- three of the best onscreen kickers in Hong Kong action cinema -- in the movie is what the movie needs to deliver the action scenes the way you want. All three doesn't do bad either in the acting department and sells their characters decently with their acting skills beyond looking like they're just acting for the sake of acting. As an open-minded movie watcher in general, I'm also positive when it comes to the way the movie is: A good attempt of mixing certain genres with the appropriate performers to succeed with the overall story and acting required.

Altogether, THE HOLY VIRGIN VERSUS THE EVIL DEAD comes recommended and deserves more recognition for being part of a successful sub-genre that includes THE SEVENTH CURSE and KILLER'S NOCTURNE. The goal of these type of movies: Successfully showing different sides of particular stories with particular movie genres.
