Summary: My Belove (1999)
Before the Chinese New Year, usually there are lots of movies showing to fill in the gaps between the X'Mas and Chinese New Year movies, 'My Belove' maybe one of the examples as it opens without much promotions and it is only in 5 cinemas extracted from BIG-Mandarin circuit only. Some of you may not know the existance of this movie until now.

'My Belove' starts with Yuk-kam (Carrie NG Kar-lai) who is pregant while his husband is away to Hong Kong for a better life and left her alone. Yuk-kam tried her best to feed her son Lok-lok (Xia Yue) up while she had a very bad health due to her anxious and expectations from the coming back of her husband. Lok-lok grows up as a street boy who always makes troubles. Once when Yuk-kam was in the hospital again while her health conditions is too bad that she would be in hospital for months, Lok-lok decided to go to Hong Kong to find his Dad ......

In terms of the plot and screenplay, the original objective of 'My Belove' is to show the love of a mother (Carrie NG Kar-lai) to her son Lok-lok (Xia Yue). However, the outcomes is not on their expectation. Carrie NG as a weak woman in her 40s. She looks like shit at all times for the movies, even more horrible that what we look in ghost stories, while audience has no intention to watch in the screenplay as she is too horrible for everyone to follow. Lok-lok, as a street boy, should be naughty while loyal to his Mon. Unfortunately, the descriptions for the love between Yuk-kam and Lok-lok is too typical for audience to accept. One of the obvious example is that Lok-lok is fighting with gangs and being caught by the police and the scene followed when Lok-lok is back home. The dialogues are all predictable and Yuk-kam is over-reacted as a real Mon. Audience failed to feel why Yuk-kam behaves like that.

Another focus of the movie should be how deep Yuk-kam has thought about her husband but it is also failed to describe. What we can see from Yuk-kam on the scene is that she gets faint from time to time. I regret to say that this has bored audience after watching for the first ten minutes. Though we know that this is a movie with lots of PRC scenes, this does not mean that PRC audience expect that. The production should bear in mind that PRC audience are not as stereotyped as they expect.

In terms of performance, I consider there is no way for Carrie NG kar-lai to act at all. What we can see from her is she looks shit for all times while she tried to present her dialogues in a monopolis way. For Xia Yue, I consider I perfer his performance in 'In the Heat of the Summer'. For 'My Belove', he is only trying to repeat himself.

In short, I consider 'My Belove' has got a positive theme and topic but presented in an old-fashioned and typical way that makes audience refuse to get the message after watching the first 10 minutes. The performance of Carrie NG is so monopolis that audience get bored after watching her shit look. I regret that I have seen this movie.
