Hong Kong History X (2000)

Summary: GOOD
Before I watched this, there was one thing that kept going through my mind: “is this going to be a rip-off of the US movie ‘AMERICAN HISTORY X’?” Clearly inspired by the movie title, but nothing like it.

A gang/triad movie, which is slightly more serious than the Y&D type movies. Still, too much violence I thought at times, more than was necessary to make the point they were trying to make, including some rather brutal scenes.

I’m usually not much of a follower of Anthony Wong, but he was quite good compared to other movies he’s been in over the last few years. Helena Law is excellent, one of these people who shows no sign of stopping! She’s been in the HK movie business since the 40’s, and although ageing a bit, she still has not lost her acting ability. Yoyo Mung, still reasonably new to acting, is also pretty good.

But as for HK History X, I think I would say it is one of the better of 2000, and if you like crime movies, you should check it out. Also see my review for Hong Kong History Y if you are planning on seeing that.
Rating: 4/5

(This rating is based on the years release and genre, I’m not comparing it to older or newer films.)
